1950s aprons; pies from “Plenty O Pie” fabric designed by Jessica Warrick through Spoonflower. Installation created for Design Made Visible at Mad River Arts in Waitsfield, Vermont.
I always find myself wanting to animate aprons in some way. Women’s aprons of the 1950s range from June Cleaver’s super wholesome aprons, to sheer “cocktail” aprons adorned with hearts and lace; the mom’s apron here lies somewhere in-between. The steer on the dad’s apron was a popular image on men’s BBQ aprons of the era. Here mom runs with pies and little son juggles corn cobs. My animation of these aprons emphasizes the gender stereotypes inherent in them.
