SAKABUKURO
2016-17
Cloth, thread, metal, bakelite
30 ¼ x 9 ½”
Japanese menders are treasures of the historical stitching community, reinforcing fabric with great artistry for longevity, warmth, and strength. The base of this piece is a typically mended Sakabukuro, a filter bag used in the traditional process of making the ancient, Japanese fermented rice wine, sake. I have added historical and contemporary components, and stitching, to emphasize the elegance of this utilitarian object.
