This heartbreakingly beautiful flag found its way to me at just the right moment. I had intended to print the words directly on the flag, but couldn’t bring myself to permanently alter it. It wasn’t so much an issue of defacement, still a federal offense, as much as respect for this faded, gorgeous piece of cloth that represents so much—good, bad, and currently under siege from within. The majorette’s baton hails from Middlebury High School.
